Prior Learning Assessment

A Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) evaluates whether a student’s previous coursework and/or relevant work experience meets the learning outcomes/competencies within a program at Coastal College of British Columbia (CCBC). CCBC recognizes that students may have acquired knowledge and skills through prior post-secondary education, or work experience. Students may receive advanced credit through the PLA process. Credits awarded through PLA may apply toward program completion/graduation requirements.

CCBC recognizes the following prior learning:

  • Work Experience: The student may provide confirmation of prior learning in a work experience setting. If that work experience equates to the learning outcomes /objectives of a course or program at CCBC, credit will be granted.
  • Coursework Assessment: The candidate may provide confirmation of prior learning in previously completed coursework to CCBC. If that learning equates to the learning outcomes/objectives of a course at CCBC, credit may be granted.

 Procedure

  1. The student submits a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Form, along with documentation supporting their prior learning and experience, to practicum@coastalcollegeofbc.com.
    • For previously completed coursework, an official transcript is to be submitted.
    • For work experience, the student submits a completed Work Experience/Practicum Evaluation Form, along with a letter of employment or recent pay stub.
  2. A non-refundable PLA fee of $100 must be paid to payments@coastalcollegeofbc before the assessment is conducted.
  3. The Director of Instruction will review the PLA application and supporting documentation within five (5) business days of receipt.
  4. After completing the assessment, the student will receive a copy of the outcome.
  5. A student who disagrees with the outcome of a Prior Learning Assessment may appeal the decision through the College’s established appeals process.
  6. Credits awarded through the Prior Learning Assessment process will appear on the student’s official transcript.

The Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) process is applied consistently and fairly to all students. In accordance with the requirements of the British Columbia Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, students may receive Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) credit for up to 50% of the total program.
